82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper found dead

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper was found unresponsive in his barracks room, Aug. 15. His death is currently under investigation by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
Pfc. Tanner Contla, 22, of West Linn, Oregon, was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
“Pfc. Contla was an outstanding Paratrooper who in a very short time made himself part of the team and earned the reputation of one that could be counted on no matter the situation. His commitment to helping others and positive energy is something that will surely be missed across the battalion,” said Lt. Col. J.C. White, commander of 2nd Bn., 505th PIR.
Contla joined the Army in April 2014. Upon completion of One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 82nd Abn. Div. in November 2014.
Contla’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.
He is survived by his parents.

The U.S. Army is investigating the death of a West Linn soldier found dead in his barracks at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Pfc. Tanner Contla, 22, was found unresponsive Saturday, according to an Army news release. The Army's Criminal Investigation Command is looking into is death

Contla was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

"Pfc. Contla was an outstanding paratrooper who, in a very short time, made himself part of the team and earned the reputation of one that could be counted on no matter the situation," said Lt. Col. J.C. White, Contla's unit commander. "His commitment to helping others and positive energy is something that will surely be missed across the battalion."

A 2010 West Linn High School graduate, Contla worked at Safeway while attending Portland Community College. He then studied at Brigham Young University – Idaho, before joining the Army in April 2014. Upon completion of One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in November.

Contla's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.

Survivors include his parents, Mitchell and Jennifer Contla, and his brother, Zachary Contla.
